Manly Palmer Hall was a Canadian-American author, lecturer, and mystic, best known for his writings on Freemasonry, Hermeticism, Qabbalah, and Rosicrucian philosophy. His most famous work is The Secret Teachings of All Ages, an encyclopedia of the symbolism and wisdom of the esoteric traditions.

Early life and education

Hall was born on March 18, 1901, in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. He was raised in a middle-class family and had a keen interest in religion, philosophy, and the mysteries of the universe from an early age. At the age of 16, he left school and moved to Los Angeles, California, where he devoted himself to the study of the occult traditions.

Career

In 1923, Hall published his first book, The Initiates of the Flame, which explores the connections between Freemasonry and the ancient mystery traditions. In 1928, he founded the Philosophical Research Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to the study of the wisdom of the ages.

In 1934, Hall published his magnum opus, The Secret Teachings of All Ages. This monumental work, which has been translated into multiple languages, offers a synthesis of the major esoteric doctrines of the East and West.

Hall also wrote many other books, including The Lost Keys of Freemasonry, The Secret Teachings of the Rosicrucians, and The Adepts Series. He also lectured extensively throughout the world on topics such as religion, philosophy, astrology, and alchemy.

Death and legacy

Controversies

Hall was a controversial figure during his lifetime. Some critics accused him of plagiarism, and others questioned the veracity of his claims. However, his supporters regard him as a serious scholar and a genuine initiate of the mysteries.
