The legendary Willard Library, a 140-year-old Victorian landmark, has long been a focal point of local ghost stories, most notably that of the mysterious “Grey Lady” who is said to haunt its halls. First seen by a maintenance worker in the 1930s, her presence has been the subject of countless whispered tales and eerie encounters. But a recent incident captured on security footage has reignited curiosity — and chills — far beyond Evansville.

Late one night, library security cameras recorded something strange: a locked door, with no one nearby, quietly opened and closed on its own. Staff had clearly locked the door earlier — the video confirms this — and the building's alarm system, which only arms when all doors are fully latched, had verified that it was secure. There were no signs of forced entry, no drafts, and no technical issues with the door mechanism. Most disturbingly: no one was there.

“We watched the footage several times,” said one staff member, requesting anonymity. “You can see the door being locked. Minutes later, it opens… then closes, slowly and silently. No sounds. No shadows. Just… movement.”
